I remember in grade two French class, we would play a round of “7UP”, (a variation of duck-duck-goose, but with eyes shut, and heads down on the desks) at the beginning of classes- it might have been a game invented by the teacher to centre our focus. I don’t remember 7UP to have been especially fun, but at that age, with its ability to stall the lessons- it was fun enough. This one day, I'd been “goosed” into running to another desk, and as I slid into my new desk, I came face to face with a perfect drawing of Blanka.
It came at me, frozen in mid-roar. There couldn't have been a better way for me to encounter this drawing but by rushing into my seat like that, it made the drawing alive.
How invigoratingly pleasant, that that bit of savvy classroom doodle stuck in my psyche long enough that almost 25 years later, it made sure to reappear on a large, ten-year-old tabletop standing upright in my living room. This reminder that drawing can be a longing for a chance at true recollection, transportation in time, maybe even a reforging of a past– in the case of Blanka, it took me to one of the first times I met all the things drawing could be.
